Here's a step-by-step video on how to make a zip cover by Alanda Craft
Below you'll find the written guide.
Here's the complete guide to help you carry out this repair using a sewing machine.
Supplies You’ll Need
- Seam ripper
- Head pins
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Thread (matching the cushion cover color)
- New zip (similar in color, thickness, and length to the old one)
Note: Repairs are carried out at your own risk!
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1 : Remove the Old Zip
- Turn the cushion cover inside out.
- Use a seam ripper to carefully unstitch the old zip.
- Remove the broken zip and any loose threads.
Step 2 : Pin the New Zip
- Close the new zip before pinning it.
- Align the new zip with the opening of the cushion cover, ensuring the slider is on the correct side.
- Use head pins to secure the zip in place.
Tip: Take the old zip to a haberdashery shop to find a new zip that matches in color, length, and thickness.
Step 3 : Sew the New Zip
- Using your sewing machine, sew the zip along its entire length on both sides.
- Avoid stitching too close to the teeth of the zip. You can use a zip foot for better precision.
Step 4 : Secure the Ends of the Zip
- Turn the cushion cover right side out, leaving the zip open.
- Secure the zip at both ends by stitching across and back with your sewing machine.
- Make an L-shaped stitch: Place a head pin about 2 cm from the end, start straight stitching from the side towards the opening, turn a quarter turn at the zip, and sew over the end without stitching over the teeth.
Step 5 : Final Result
- Put the cushion back into the cover.
- Your cushion is now ready to return to the sofa!
By following these steps, you can effectively replace a broken zip on your cushion cover, ensuring it looks as good as new. 🤗
